Here are this week’s Top 5 Things to Know:
- As I was pleased to announce last week, Suzanne Raitt, Vice Dean for Arts, Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies and Chancellor Professor of English, has started transitioning to the role of acting dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences with an official start date of Jan. 1, 2023. The search for a new full-time dean is open to both internal and external candidates; serious consideration will be given to all who apply. More information on that process will be shared soon.
- W&M offices will be closed for Election Day tomorrow, Nov. 8, and no undergraduate classes are scheduled; visit Academic Calendars for more information, including graduate program calendars. As demonstrated through work on Vision 2026’s democracy initiative and many other avenues, the W&M community has a deep history of democratic engagement and commitment to civil discourse.
- I want to recognize our iGEM team’s success in the Grand Jamboree in Paris last month. The students, advised by Chancellor Professor of Biology Margaret Saha, earned a gold medal and also won the Best Software & AI Project track. I had the pleasure of talking with the students earlier this year about their work, and am glad that my office was able to help them get to Paris where they represented our university so admirably.
- Throughout the week and up to Veterans Day, there are several events to engage the W&M community. This includes the annual Veterans Day Brunch held by the offices of Student Transition Engagement Programs and Student Veteran Engagement on Friday, Nov. 11, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Sadler Center’s new Slice area; followed at 10:45 a.m. by the Veterans Day Bell-Ringing Ceremony at the Wren Building. I also personally want to extend my gratitude to all of our veteran community members.
- The shout-out for this week goes to the faculty and staff in performing and visual arts, especially dance, theatre, and music, for their ongoing grace and flexibility as the Arts Quarter construction progresses. Although we all look forward to the projected completion of the PBK renovation and the new music building next year, the faculty, staff and students affected by the renovations have patiently adapted their work in the meantime. This fall, I encourage you to enjoy the 2022-2023 Ewell Concert Series hosted by the Department of Music; the line-up is exceptional. I look forward to continued conversations with the A&S faculty and dean as we imagine a bright new future for the arts at W&M.
