About
William Walton, Acuff Professor of Marine Science and Shellfish Aquaculture Program Coordinator, obtained his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from the University of Maryland. Most recently Director, Auburn University Shellfish Lab, Dauphin Island, AL and Professor, Auburn University School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences and Marine Extension Specialist, Alabama Cooperative Extension System Bill headed south from New England about 12 years ago with the challenge of developing oyster aquaculture in Alabama. Through his leadership, oyster aquaculture not only in Alabama but most Gulf states is thriving and expanding. His ability to focus research on industry needs was recognized with the National Sea Grant Association Research to Application Award in 2016. He has forged connections in his role as an extension specialist throughout the region culminating in the establishment of Oyster South, a non-profit charitable organization that connects growers, wholesalers, chefs and gear suppliers throughout the southern states. He has worked closely with growers, hatcheries, and researchers to address critical roadblocks to profitable aquaculture through applied research, frequently connecting commercial farms and Auburn students. As the Acuff Professor, his leadership will complement the existing strengths in shellfish aquaculture by establishing a robust institute-wide Shellfish Aquaculture Program.
