To recognize staff and faculty whose exceptional service exemplifies William & Mary's stated values: Belonging, Curiosity, Excellence, Flourishing, Integrity, Respect and Service
In November 2019, W&M affirmed its first-ever statement of values. These values are both reflective of and aspirational for the W&M community.
Amid pandemic, many individuals have far exceeded the usual duties of their job in order to support the university and its people during crisis. In recognition of these extraordinary efforts, two generous donors who wish to remain anonymous established the Values in Action Award.
The Values in Action Award is given to William & Mary staff and faculty whose efforts exemplify W&M's values. The award is accompanied by a $2,500 cash prize for each recipient.
Timeline for Distribution
At least four Values in Action Awards will be given this semester (Spring 2021) and then at least two Awards in Fall 2021, Spring 2022 and Fall 2022.
At least two Values in Action Awards will be presented in subsequent years and may be distributed in both fall and spring semesters, reflecting an ongoing annual commitment by the donors.
The President will present the inaugural Values in Action awards in April–May 2021.
Selection Criteria and Process
The President will name a committee for a 1-year term to select recipients. The Committee will accept nominations from the Cabinet in Spring 2021 and expand to an open nomination process in AY22 and beyond. All non-student employees of W&M or contractors providing auxiliary services to the university are eligible for nomination.
Nominees will be evaluated based on their leadership of an initiative that exemplifies W&M's values. Nominators should submit a completed nomination form and no more than two letters of support. Letters may be written by students, faculty or staff, and should speak to the initiative(s) the employee led and its reflection of W&M's values.
Nominations for Spring 2021 are due by Friday, April 16.
