Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies and Linguistics
Rachel Varra, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies and Linguistics, earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics in 2013 from the City College of New York. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, Spanish in the U.S., bilingual language processing, and Second Language Pedagogy. She comes to W&M from the University of Miami, where she was Director of the Spanish Language Program. Her 2018 book about lexical borrowing and deborrowing in Spanish in New York immigrant contexts, is published by Routledge. In the fall she is teaching a linguistics seminar in English, “Language Contact and Change”, and a Spanish-language Spanish Phonetics course.
