Assistant Professor of English and Africana Studies
Suzette Spencer, Assistant Professor of English and Africana Studies, received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. For the last two years, she has been a Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Africana Studies at William & Mary. Her research interests include African American literature from the nineteenth century to the present, critical race theory, and film adaptations of Black American literature and history. She will be teaching Introduction to Africana Studies, early Black American literature and major African American women writers, among other courses. Professor Spencer was the proposer of “Bodies That Matter,” the COLL 300 theme for the Fall 2018 semester, and she was recently recognized by the Seven Society for her contributions to the university.
