Barbara L. Johnson J.D. '84
Ms. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science (Pre-Med concentration in Chemistry) from Hampton University in 1976, and her J.D. from the William & Mary Law School in 1984.
Ms. Johnson is the Founder of BLJohnsonLaw, PLLC and Counsel with Potter & Murdock, PC, and is based in Washington, DC. She has over 30 years of experience in representing a wide array of employers, ranging from Global 50 companies and publicly-traded companies to nonprofit organizations and educational institutions to manufacturers. Ms. Johnson has practiced law with a major corporation, a global AmLaw 100 law firm, and a minority-owned litigation boutique.
Ms. Johnson advises employers on the full gamut of workplace issues, including discrimination and wage and hour matters. She litigates and serves as trial counsel for employment disputes; arbitrator and mediator; and is a Fellow of the American Bar Association College of Labor & Employment Lawyers. She has served as an investigator for dozens of employment-related matters throughout the United States. Ms. Johnson is an active member of the Association of Workplace Investigators, a global organization of investigators committed to conducting fair and impartial investigations.
Ms. Johnson also advises organizations on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and provides guidance to employers on how to create cultures that remove barriers to DEI and that maximize human capital. She co-hosts Today’s Workplace, a podcast that addresses the intersection of employment law and human potential--todaysworkplacepodcast.com.
Ms. Johnson is a frequent speaker on a wide range of topics—from workplace harassment to African American history to storytelling,
She is licensed to practice law in Michigan, Texas, the District of Columbia, and Virginia.
Ms. Johnson currently serves as Vice Rector of the Board of Visitors.
