Mosaic House Special Interest Housing
Description
Mosaic House is a co-curricular, co-educational dorm--a special interest housing option for William & Mary undergraduates.
It is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and is housed in the Jamestown dorms.
Students who live in Mosaic House have a private node of rooms and their own lounge. They organize their own events— film series, speakers, diversity workshops, cultural fairs. Students are involved in on-going intellectual exchange about culture, diversity, interracial community, and alternative lifestyles. Mosaic provides a supportive space for students at the intersection of the campus’s growing diversification, and also welcomes students who wish to expand their cross-cultural understanding. Programs serve Mosaic House members and the broader campus community.
Program eligibility and requirements
Eligible students should apply for admission in the late fall/early spring. Students are considered eligible if they are in good academic standing and are rising sophomores, juniors or seniors. Students from any discipline are welcome to apply; they will be required to take six credits in the area of cultural/gender/sexuality diversity, so that they can contribute to the dorm’s intellectual community. Applicants will be expected to have taken at least one course on diversity issues prior to moving into the dorm, and to take a second in their first semester at the dorm. Mosaic students should also participate in cultural or activist events organized by Mosaic House during their year of residence. Participation in two committees is a resident requirement.
The Selection Committee will determine program participants. Relevant courses can be found in departments like Sociology, Women’s Studies, English, Psychology, American Studies, Environmental Studies, Black Studies, Anthropology, History, and Literary and Cultural Studies. Courses are not restricted to these departments and may be culled from across the curriculum. Most any 4B/4C course will qualify , although we are primarily interested in courses that define culture as a dialogue rather than a normative center. Courses can address race and ethnicity, gender, sex and sexuality, cultural diversity (including immigrant issues from places outside of the U.S. as well as within), religious diversity, and environmental concerns
