Effective Schoolwide Discipline (ESD) Initiative

Effective Schoolwide Discipline (ESD) is an initiative of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Responding to the need for research-validated positive behavioral intervention practices, T/TAC provides schools with professional development to implement a schoolwide discipline programs in their settings. The multi-tiered ESD model includes the following components:

1) Communicating to schools the basic tenets of a positive discipline program;
2) Guiding the faculty to establish a common vision and schoolwide expectations for student behavior;
3) Establishing consistent practices to encourage students to exhibit appropriate behavior throughout the school;
4) Collecting, summarizing, and interpreting school discipline data that are meaningful and consistent with each school’s code of conduct;
5) Defining characteristics of student behaviors and identifying positive behavioral strategies for implementation in the schools; and
6) Evaluating behavioral interventions in the schools using discipline data.

Effective Schoolwide Discipline begins with the formation of a school-based ESD team. Members of the team learn about components of the ESD model during on-going regional workshops. Based on what they learned, the team guides its school through the process. Team members learn to become facilitators of the process and conduct activities that (a) demonstrate the need for an ESD model in their school, and (b) ensure that the components of the model are research-based and implemented with integrity. Teams follow steps outlined in an ESD resource manual which provides critical features of systemic change within schools as well as pragmatic steps needed for full implementation of the ESD model.

VDOE provides support for this professional development initiative.
