Steven L. Cole, MEd, ATC, CSCS
Assistant Athletic Director for Health Services

Steve has been an athletic trainer at the College since 1983.  Over the years he has directed a Sports Medicine program that provides a wide range of comprehensive athletic health care services while continuing to grow to meet the changing needs of all the student-athletes.  In 2000, Steve was recognized as an Honorary Alumnus of the College for his distinguished services over the years. He was elevated to the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Health Services in 2004.  In this role, he oversees the sports medicine, sport psychology, and strength and conditioning programs at William and Mary.

Steve has served in several leadership positions on the local, state, and regional level.  He conducts a number of athletic training workshops both in our historic campus and across the country.  He is the co-coordinator of the ACES Preparatory workshops for athletic training students preparing for the BOC certification examination.  He has extensive public speaking experience, from local to international and from professional organizations to civic groups to private client consultation.  He also published numerous articles relevant to athletic health care and the administration of health care programs.  In 1997, he was recognized by the National Athletic Trainers' Association with the Athletic Trainer Service Award for his distinguished services to the athletic training profession over the years.  In 2006, Steve was named the NATA College and University Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Steve also runs a successful consulting firm serving athletic departments and medical practices.  He is recognized as an expert in athletic health care insurance and specializes in assisting athletic departments to enhance the efficiency and scope of service of their athletic health care program.  Steve also has an expertise in caring for the “performing arts” athlete.  He coordinates a preventive health care program for the performers, dancers and musicians at Busch Gardens and Water Country USA--two theme parks in Williamsburg.  He is also an experienced personal fitness consultant.

Steve works primarily with our men's and women's distance program and the baseball team.

Steve is a competitive age group triathlete, enjoying swimming, cycling and running.  Steve and his wife, Lonna, a family practice nurse practitioner, reside in Williamsburg with their daughters Sydney and Jahnessa.

Renée A. Cork, MEd, ATC
Senior Associate Athletic Trainer

B.S., Physical Education, Iowa State University, 1986
M.Ed., Physical Education (minor in Health Education), Southwest Texas State University, 1989

Renée was head athletic trainer at Drew University before coming here.  Renée is an American Red Cross CPR and Sports Safety Training instructor.  She also handles our scheduling matters for the athletic training facility.  She does a great job in monitoring what our teams are doing on a daily basis, as well as where they are at any given time.

Renée works primarily with women's basketball, field hockey, men's tennis, and the throwers on the track team.

Renée enjoys reading, music, gardening, and cooking, in addition to taking walks on "DoG Street" (our slang word for Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg).

Renée hails from Elgin, IL and resides in Williamsburg.

Andy Carter, MS, ATC
Associate Athletic Trainer

M.S., Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Illinois State University, 2000

Andy, a former Tribe student athletic trainer, joined the staff in 2000 as the Director of the Athletic Training Education Program to take the program through the two-year process of CAAHEP candidacy and accreditation.  As a member of the faculty of the Department of Kinesiology, Andy developed and taught the five athletic training courses offered by the College of William and Mary.  At the end of the two-year period, the decision was made to discontinue the pursuit of accreditation, so, in the summer of 2003, Andy moved into the athletic training room full time as the Associate Athletic Trainer.

Andy now oversees the health care for the football, men's and women's gymnastics, and men's and women's golf programs.  In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Andy is also involved in sports medicine education on many levels.  He is an instructor for the ACES Preparatory Workshop.  He coordinates the Sports Medicine rotation for the Riverside Family Medicine Residency Program in which resident physicians rotate through the Division of Sports Medicine to learn sports medicine techniques and orthopedic exam skills.  He oversees the Athletic Training Aide program in which pre-med and pre-physical therapy students work alongside the staff in the clinic and on the field.  Each spring, he teaches a graduate course at Old Dominion on the evaluation and treatment of the spine.  

Originally from Fieldale, VA, Andy resides in Williamsburg with his wife, Kristina, who is a physical therapist at Williamsburg Physical Therapy..

John H. Knaul, MS, ATC
Senior Assistant Athletic Trainer

B.S., Athletic Training, Alfred University, 1997
M.S., Education, Elmira College, 1999

John joined the staff of the Division of Sports Medicine in 2000 after a stint as Assistant Athletic Trainer at Lafayette College.  Prior to that, he was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Elmira College. 

John will be working primarily with men's soccer, men's & women's swimming, and women's lacrosse. 
He also handles inventory, supply, purchasing, and coordinating athletic training coverage for summer camps.

He is originally from Auburn, in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate NY.  John resides in Williamsburg with his wife Katie, who is a third grade teacher for Williamsburg-James City County Schools.

Michele R. Heisel, MEd, ATC

Michele joined the Sports Medicine staff in August of 2005.  Prior to this, Michele spent a year at Moravian College as an Assistant Athletic Trainer working primarily with men’s and women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse.  Michele did her undergraduate work at California University of Pennsylvania was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for field hockey and softball at the University of Virginia.
While at William & Mary, Michele works with volleyball and women’s tennis.

Originally from California, Pennsylvania, she currently resides in Williamsburg.

Lisa N. Shook, MHS, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Lisa joined the staff of the Division of Sports Medicine in 2005.  Before coming to William and Mary, she worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Western Carolina University while completing her Master’s degree.  Prior to Western Carolina, Lisa attended Salisbury University where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Lisa will primarily work with the women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and cheerleading teams as well as the jumpers and sprinters on the track team.

Lisa enjoys going to the beach, painting, and playing with her dog in her free time.  She is originally from Towson, MD and currently resides in Williamsburg.

Hollie Walusz

Hollie joined the staff of the Division of Sports Medicine in July of 2007.  Prior to this, she completed her undergraduate work at the University of Northern Iowa and then worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of North Carolina for women’s basketball, crew, and the fencing teams.

 
While at William & Mary, Hollie will work primarily with women’s soccer and baseball.

Originally from Mason City, IA, she currently resides in Williamsburg.

J. Tyler DePew, MS, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

B.S., Kinesiology/Athletic Training, University of Illinois-Chicago, 2003
M.S., Athletic Training, University of Oregon, 2005

Tyler re-joins the Tribe staff on a part-time basis after spending the summer working in the Detroit Tigers minor league system.  In his first season with the Tigers, Tyler serves as the Athletic Trainer for the Gulf Coast League Tigers.  Tyler was a graduate assistant while earning his M.S. at the University of Oregon.  While at Oregon, Tyler worked with the football, track & field, and wrestling teams.  Tyler graduated with honors from the University of Illinois - Chicago with a B.S. in Kinesiology while specializing in Athletic Training.  While at UIC, Tyler worked for 2 years with the men's gymnastics team.

Carla E. Boelte, BS, ATC
Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer

B.S., Athletic Training, Bridgewater College, 2006



Carla joins the sports medicine staff as a graduate assistant from Old Dominion University. While completing a B.S. degree in athletic training from Bridgewater College, Carla worked with men's soccer, women's basketball, and football. She also worked with Fort Defiance High School in Fort Defiance, Virginia.

 

Carla will be working with the field hockey and gymnastics teams this year.

Nicole R. Neumann, BS, ATC

Nicole comes to the Tribe staff from Marietta College in Marietta, OH. where she earned a B.S. in Athletic Training with a minor History. She is currently pursuing a two-year master’s degree in Athletic Training at Old Dominion University. In her first year with William and Mary she will work with the football and baseball teams, and field hockey and women’s gymnastics’ in her second year. Nicole’s interests include rowing and history. She currently resides in Williamsburg.

Michael B. Potter, MD

Dr. Potter joined our staff in 2002 to serve as the Team Physician for the College.  He is Board Certified in both Family Practice and Sports Medicine.  In addition to his duties at the Student Health Center and the Division of Sports Medicine, he is in private practice with Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group.

Dr. Potter enjoys running and participates in the many 5K's in the area.  Dr. Potter and his wife, Andrea, live in Williamsburg.  They have three daughters--Abbey, Hannah, and Brooke.
