Joseph W. Montgomery Strength Training Center

The Joseph W. Montgomery Strength Training Center is located on the lower level of Kaplan Arena.  This 5000 square foot facility contains 12,000 lbs. of free weights, 6,500 pounds of dumbbells, and 6,000 pounds of bumper plates.  In addition, it contains 24 Olympic platforms, 18 power racks, 2 Hammer Strength jammer stations, 2 Power Squats, and a wide variety of selectorized machines.  The Center also contains several additional pieces of training equipment, including medicine balls, physioballs, sand balls, 2 jump trainers, 6 glute-ham machines, slideboards, balance boards, plyometric boxes, dot drill pads, etc.

This center was designed by W&M head strength coach John Sauer in 1995. This state-of-art center was made through the generosity of Joseph W. Montgomery. Joe Montgomery '74 enjoyed a stellar career at William and Mary. At 6-3, 240 pounds, Joe started as a sophomore for the Indians at offensive center. That year he helped pave the way for Southern Conference Athlete of the year Phil Mosser. He earned all-conference honors as a junior and repeated as a senior when he captained the Tribe. He also earned All-ECAC honors that year and third team All-America laurels. Montgomery was selected to play in the Blue-Gray game in January after his senior year. He continued to play professionally for the WFL Charlotte Hornets in 1975 and was inducted into the W&M Hall of Fame in 1985.

In the 1971 media guide, then head coach Lou Holtz said, "Joe, although only a sophomore, has excellent potential to be a fine center."
Joe now lives in Williamsburg with his wife Linda and their two children Joseph and Madeline.

Training Philosophy

The training programs designed by the Speed-Strength & Conditioning staff at the College of William & Mary encompass all aspects of speed, agility, conditioning, strength, flexibility, and injury prevention with an emphasis on proper technique and safety.  All of the training programs are centered around functional, free weight exercises specifically the olympic lifts (i.e., clean, jerk, snatch, etc.)  These exercises are ideal for simulating the physiological rigors of competition.

The goal of the Speed-Strength & Conditioning staff at the College of William & Mary is to create a positive training environment that will give each student-athlete the very best opportunity to maximize their potential.  Individualized, sport-specific training programs are designed to meet each student-athlete's needs.  The true success of any training program is a direct result of the implementation.  The Tribe staff believes that TRUST and ADHERENCE are established by educating student-athletes about their training throughout the process.  Experience has shown that better educated student-athletes are more likely to train HARDER and SMARTER.  The Tribe training experience promotes COMPETITON, ACCOUNTABILITY, TEAM UNITY, and DISCIPLINE.
