General information for incoming recruits

The William and Mary Rowing Club is a very competitive program that races against other club and varsity programs on the East coast and from around the country. We practice five to six days a week (five for novice, six for varsity), and all members race during the season. We train throughout the year, on the water in the fall and the spring, and training indoors on the erg in the winter. There is a mandatory training trip over spring break (past locations have included Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida), as well as an optional trip for the second half of winter break.

If you are interested in rowing/coxing, please keep the following in mind:
When scheduling classes, it would be ideal to have class after 9 a.m. Morning practices involve leaving campus at 5:00 a.m. and arriving back on campus at 8:00-8:15 a.m.. Therefore it can be difficult to schedule practice times for rowers who have 8 a.m. classes.

Dues are $200 per semester for novice and $300 for varsity (keep in mind that these can be paid for with extra fundraising), in addition to a $200 fundraising commitment per semester. Fundraising is not difficult to complete as all members of the team do this, often in groups working in the Williamsburg community. Our fundraisers include work weekends, football stadium cleanups, etc. (For more information about fundraising, please click here.)

No previous experience is required. At the beginning of the year we have a Learn-To-Row program for all of the incoming rowers/coxswains, which involves a few weeks of learning rowing basics, starting indoors on the ergs and then going out on the water in mixed lineups with the varsity. During this period no permanent commitment is made for the novice. Once Learn-To-Row is over novice can decide whether they wish to continue and if so, are expected to row for the remainder of the year.
