Our National Fraternity Heritage
Pi Beta Phi Fraternity was founded at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Iliinois, on April 28, 1867 as I. C. Sorosis. In 1881 the colors wine and silver blue were adopted, along with the motto "Pi Beta Phi," the first Greek motto. In 1888, the name I. C. Sorosis was changed to Pi Beta Phi and the organization took its place as the first national, secret, college society of women to be modeled after the Greek letter fraternities of men. During a time when few women were admitted to colleges and universities, Pi Beta Phi created a feeling of unity among pioneering women. All the way up to the present day, members of Pi Beta Phi strive to implement the ideals of the founders into their own lives.
