The purpose of the Middle Eastern Cultural Association (MECA) is to educate the college and community about Middle Eastern culture and history. Today, more than ever, understanding the Middle East outside of the political realm is necessary for keeping in touch with our humanity. Politicians, social commentators and journalists have spoken and written about the "clash of civilizations" that they foresee in the aftermath of the devastating 9-11 attacks on the United States of America. However, what these "experts" have failed to understand and mention is that the only clash that exists is a clash of ignorance. To combat this clash of ignorance, it is MECA's mission to educate the Williamsburg community about the many similarities that exist today between citizens of the Middle East and citizens of the United States. These similarities are the basis for which both peoples can realize and understand that they share the same values and principles, which will lead to greater harmony and peace between the two peoples.

"What is praised is one, so the praise is one too, many jugs being poured into a huge basin. All religions, all this singing, one song. The differences are just illusion and vanity. Sunlight looks slightly different on this wall than it does on that wall and a lot different on this other one, but it is still one light. We have borrowed these clothes, these time-and-space personalities, from a light, and when we praise, we pour them back in."   - Jelaluddin Rumi - 13th century Muslim Persian Poet
