James Armstrong, Director of Choirs and Associate Professor of Music, received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied conducting and voice with Robert Fountain. Before coming to William and Mary, Professor Armstrong held faculty appointments at Mount Holyoke College, Vassar College and, most recently, the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests range from eighteenth-century Viennese sacred music to indigenous vocal music of South Africa and historically-informed performance. Katzbichler Verlag (Munich, Germany) is soon to publish his book, Litaniae Lauretanae: Sacred Music at the Viennese Imperial Court, ca. 1700-1783.

See an article about Dr. Armstrong that appeared in the Flat Hat, the campus newspaper, on March 29, 1996.
