With the 2005-2006 academic year, the Choir of the College of William and Mary celebrates 83 years of choral singing at the second oldest institution of higher education in the United States (chartered 1693). The Choir is an undergraduate ensemble of about seventy members who represent a wide array of disciplines. Auditions are held only once a year, in the fall, right at the beginning of the school year. The Choir makes over thirty appearances during the year; we sing at most of the formal events of the College, including Convocation, Homecoming, Sunset Ceremony, Yule Log, Charter Day and Commencement. On campus, the major concerts for the Choir are the Holiday Concerts at the end of Fall semester, and the Spring concerts in late April. In addition, every third year the Choir gives the George Clayman Concerts--a series devoted to the major choral/orchestral repertory. The Choir also takes an annual, regional, five-day Spring Tour held in mid-March. If you are interested in hosting the Choir or suggesting a place to perform, please contact us. We would love to visit your town and sing for you. The Choir sings abroad regularly, appearing in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia in the summer of 2002, and Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary in 1999. The Choir and Botetourt Chamber Singers have just returned from their triennial, three-week international tour in June of 2005, this time to Romania, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. The Choir has had the honor of performing for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and was one of four choirs invited to perform in concert with the United States Marine Band at the 1997 Presidential Inaugural on the Capitol steps in Washington, D.C. In February 1997, the Choir participated in Ambassador Pamela Harriman's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. At the invitation of the Marine Band, the Choir participated in the Marine Band's recording of Charles Cushing's Angel Camp which was released on CD in 1998. The Choir's repertoire is drawn from the great Western European choral tradition of the last five hundred years as well as from choral traditions the world over.
