In the absence of a deep plowzone, feature recognition was challenging. On a plowed site, feature outlines usually appear in contrast to lighter-colored subsoil. However, at Site 44JC969, the transition from topsoil to subsoil was more gradual. The first hints of subfloor pits (see Feature 134 above) often came from amorphous, artifact-rich cultural deposits like Feature 14. Increased artifact density was the main factor in identifying these features, as their color and texture were similar to the surrounding topsoil.
