Patrick Foley, Sustainability Fellow

Patrick Foley (BA '12) is the College of William & Mary's Sustainability Fellow for 2012-2013. Working under the direction of Lynda Butler of the Law School and Dennis Taylor, professor emeritus of VIMS, the  co-chairs of the Committee on Sustainability (COS), Foley is responsible for coordinating COS's sustainability initiatives and promoting the College's sustainability goals.  The fellow works closely with students, faculty, and administration at the College on a wide variety of issues.  Some of his responsibilities include researching fundraising opportunities, encouraging collaboration among different groups  across campus on sustainable projects , preparing press releases to publicize the College's latest sustainability-focused activities , and maintaining the COS website.

As an undergraduate at the College, Foley served as one of only three student representatives to the COS Steering Committee as well as the co-chair of the Programs and Education Subcommittee. He became involved with the Committee on Sustainability as a freshman through Sharpe Community Scholars, working on a green roof feasibility study and research project. He also served as a Sustainability Intern for COS and was awarded a Summer Research grant in the summer of 2011 to conduct a comparative analysis of the quality of public transit systems at different colleges and universities.  Foley graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History and Government, Summa Cum Laude, from William & Mary in the spring of 2012 before beginning his tenure as the College Sustainability Fellow. In addition to his work on environmental issues, he is also very active in politics, having interned on Bill Keating's Congressional campaign as well as in the Office of United States Senator John Kerry. Following his appointment to this position, he intends to earn his Juris Doctorate so that he may study environmental law and pursue a career as an advocate for a more sustainable public policy.
