Found Treasures

We do a lot of research at the Special Collections archives at James Branch Cabell Library of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Here's where we'll post images of really cool stuff that we've found.

Some of the archives we've investigated include records of the VCU Gay Student Alliance, the Fan Free Clinic (1971-2006) and the Richmond chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), as well as many historical newspapers and periodicals. Find detailed information on the VCU Cabell Library holdings.

W&M GALA Joins 1991 Lawsuit Against ABC

These images outline the central role played by the William & Mary Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association (GALA) in a lawsuit to strike down a 1934 policy by the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). The policy stated, in part, that the ABC could revoke or suspend a license if an establishment was found to be a meeting place for "homosexuals." GALA's decision to join the lawsuit was prompted by an incident surrounding Homecoming in 1990, when GALA was initially refused a reservation at a Williamsburg hotel because the establishment feared losing its ABC licenceThe ABC law was struck down and declared unconstitutional in October, 1991.
