Margie’s early career in higher education focused greatly on LGBTQ services and advocacy. She was involved in LGBTQ advocacy efforts at NIU for 16 years. In 2006, during her tenure as director of the LGBT Resource Center, NIU was recognized by the Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students as one of the 100 best campuses for LGBT students in the nation. She designed the NIU Safe Zone Ally Program, which was used as a model by more than 40 colleges and universities nationwide. Margie has designed and facilitated workshops and experiential training on a multitude of aspects of LGBT identity and experience.

Margie lives in Richmond with her partner, who is a faculty member at VCU. Their daughter lives in Illinois and currently works as a legal and medical advocate and public educator for domestic violence and sexual assault services.
