AboutMa Lei (马磊) is Chinese Deputy Director of Confucius Institute at W&M. She came from the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Beijing Normal University, partner Chinese university with W&M for CI. A veteran TESOL professor, she has over twenty years of experience teaching English at BNU, and has held a variety of other posts throughout her career. In addition to teaching as Associate Professor at BNU and serving as Vice Dean of the Center for Teaching English to Non-English Majors at the same school from 1996-2000, Professor Ma’s previous experience in the field of education also includes posts at the British Embassy to China in Beijing, Beijing International School, Beijing Haidian District Educational Committee, as well as short teaching postings in Shenzhen, Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces. In Beijing, Professor Ma has translated for several high-level organizations including CCTV, Beijing Television Network, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and BNU. She also has served as an Oral Examiner of English for Trinity College of London’s Examination Authority in Beijing, and worked as a Test Center Manager for APICS USA in the China’s capital.
Professor Ma is expected to receive her Ph.D. from the Research Institute of Folklore and Social Development at BNU in 2012. She obtained her Master in TESOL at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada in 1992, and earned her BA in English Language and Literature from BNU in 1987. She has many years of experience of working and living abroad. The countries where she worked and lived include the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK and India.
