The Winter Graduates Recognition Ceremony is an event that differs from May’s Commencement ceremony. Typically, about 150 winter graduates and their families attend (about 400 people total).
The ceremony takes place in the Sadler Center, Chesapeake Rooms and lasts about 45 minutes. The program typically includes remarks from the Graduate Council President, Senior Class President, a recent alum and the President of the College. It also includes an alumni pinning ceremony and a toast to the graduates. Each graduate is recognized by name, at which point the graduate walks across a small stage to receive an imitation diploma (actual diplomas are mailed out in January).
The socializing/reception takes place in the adjacent Tidewater Rooms immediately following the ceremony. It lasts about an hour and includes light refreshments. Please note that there is limited seating in the reception room. Most guests and students stand throughout reception.
What to Wear
Business attire is appropriate for graduates and guests. This is not a formal ceremony. Graduates do not wear academic regalia (caps and gowns) at this event.
Unlike the formal Commencement exercises in May, we do not require tickets. However, degree candidates are asked to only bring up to four guests to this event (the number based on the space limitation of the room).
