BEINECKE SCHOLARSHIPS
INFORMATION SESSIONThe Beinecke Scholarship provides substantial scholarships for students of exceptional promise to attend graduate school in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Applicants must be juniors, have a 3.7 GPA (campus nomination requirement) and have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid as an undergraduate OR be able to provide a statement from a financial aid officer indicating how much need-based aid the student would receive if they were not receiving support from the non-need-based source (merit award or tuition exchange).
Tuesday, January 22, 5-6 p.m., Charles Center Lounge, Tucker Hall basement Click here to RSVP by 3 p.m. on Tuesday. RSVPs are for pizza ordering purposes only.
The 2008 campus application deadline is 12 p.m. Tuesday February 12
2008 William & Mary Nomination Process
Candidates for the W&M nomination must submit the original and two copies of the following items to the Charles Center by the 12 noon Tuesday February 12 2008 deadline:
- financial data sheet completed by a financial aid officer certifying that the applicants qualifies for need-based financial aid
- application form
- a current resume (2 pages maximum)
- personal statement of 1000 words or less describing the applicant’s background, interests, plans for graduate study and career aspirations. The statement should include a discussion of some experiences and ideas that have shaped those interests, plans and aspirations
- one official transcript that includes spring 2008 course registration
In addition, applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from faculty members. These letters should focus on the nominee’s intellectual curiosity, character and potential for advanced graduate study. Applicants should submit the letters (in sealed envelopes signed across the seal) to the Charles Center with the rest of their application materials. One copy of these letters is sufficient.
Give your recommenders adequate time to complete their letters! Meet with them to discuss the Beinecke Scholarship and your motivation for applying and to provide them with a copy of your resume and a draft of your statement.
Finally, applicants must have at least one consultation with a Charles Center Peer Scholarship Advisor to discuss the personal statement. PSA office hours and contact information are posted here.
A note on financial aid: The statement in the Program Announcement that "primary evidence of meeting this criterion is a student's history of receiving need-based institutional, state, or federal grants-in-aid" reflects the Beinecke Scholarship Program's desire to award the scholarship to candidates for whom the awarding of a scholarship would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school. However, any student who has received any amount of need-based financial aid during their undergraduate years is eligible to be nominated for a Beinecke Scholarship.
