Although applications will be considered at any time, it is advisable to submit all materials before 1 February to be assured of consideration for admission in the fall. A complete application consists of an application form, transcripts of all college work, three letters of recommendation, and Graduate Record Examination results from the general test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) and the physics subject test. Those for whom English is not their first language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). All test scores will be reviewed in conjunction with the rest of the application. Assistantships, fellowships and scholarships are awarded on the basis of the above materials. The Graduate Admissions Committee, comprised of physics faculty, recommends admission and financial aid. Typically, only students interested in pursuing the PhD will be considered for aid.

There are usually about fifty-seven resident students in the program, all of whom receive full financial support. Full support includes tuition and other fees, student health insurance, and a twelve-month stipend. For the 2007-08 session the stipend is $20,000 per year, and this will increase to $21,000 per year for the 2008-09 session and to $22,000 per year for the 2009-2010 session. Approximately 10 full time students are admitted each fall. This number is determined primarily by departmental resources and funds available from state and federal agencies. Adequate resources have enabled us to offer full financial support to all students making satisfactory progress toward their degrees.
