Frequently Asked Questions about All Gender Facilities
What is an All Gender restroom?
An All Gender restroom is a facility that can be used by people of any sex or gender. Currently at the College of William & Mary, single occupancy restroom across campus have been designated as All Gender and can be used by anyone.
What is an All Gender shower facility?
An All Gender shower facility is a single-occupancy facility that can be used by people of any sex or gender. At the College of William & Mary, single occupancy shower facilities across campus have been designated as All Gender and can be used by anyone. Note that these facilities may or may not include a toilet as part of the facility.
Why do we need All Gender restrooms and shower facilities on campus?
For people who are transgender (or Trans), or who don't conform to commonly assumed gender norms (gender non-binary), using a multi-stall, gender-designated restroom or shower facility can be difficult, because they are often assumed to be in the incorrect facility and may be confronted or harassed. All Gender restrooms and shower facilities provide safe, private facilities for individuals who experience discomfort or are challenged in gender-designated facilities. In short, everyone deserves safe, dignified access to restrooms and shower facilities. Providing All Gender facilities is also a way for the College to show Trans and gender non-binary individuals that our community values their presence and cares about their health and safety.
Who is allowed to use an All Gender restroom or shower facility?
Anyone! All Gender restrooms and shower facilities create private, individual spaces that are accessible to all people. Many other people benefit from All Gender facilities, such as parents caring for children of a different gender or individuals with caretakers who need accompaniment.
Will there still be gender specific restrooms and shower facilities?
Yes. There are people who want or need to use gender specific restrooms. The important thing is that there are equally accessible options for everyone.
Are Trans individuals restricted to using only All Gender restrooms?
No. If a Trans or gender non-binary individual chooses to use a gender-designated restroom, they may use the facility that corresponds with their gender identity. Each individual should determine the most appropriate, most comfortable and safest option for themselves. This approach was recently recommended by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) in its document, Transgender Bathroom Access Best Practices, and is supported by William & Mary policy.
