  • Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)
    The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) manages the basic research investment for the U.S. Air Force. As a part of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), AFOSR's technical experts foster and fund research within AFRL, universities, and industry laboratories to ensure the transition of research results to support USAF needs. AFOSR invites proposals for research in many broad areas.
  • Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
    The Foundation promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. The research fellowships and research awards allow you to come to Germany to work on a research project you have chosen yourself together with a host and collaborative partner.
  • American Chemical Society/Petroleum Research Fund (PRF)
    ACS offers grants to support the advancement of the chemical sciences through research, education, and community projects. The society encourages research in chemistry, earth sciences, chemical engineering, and in related fields such as polymers and materials science. ACS also offers two types of Public Policy Fellowship programs: the Science Policy Fellowship and the Congressional Fellowship.
  • American Diabetes Association
    The American Diabetes Association Research Program supports basic and clinical diabetes research aimed at preventing, treating, and curing diabetes. Our projects cover such areas as genetics, islet cell biology, immunology, diabetes education and behavioral research. The program is designed to complement the National Institutes of Health (NIH) diabetes research program by supporting new investigators and new research ideas.
  • American Federation for Aging Research
    Research on aging and aging processes leads the way to a greater understanding of all age-related diseases. The grant and fellowship programs encourage scientists and physicians to pursue careers in the aging field.
  • The American Mathematical Society (AMS) offers the Centennial Fellowship Program.
    The American Mathematical Society provides programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday life. AMS offers the Centennial Research Fellowship Program to mathematicians to help further their careers in research. Recipients must have held their doctoral degree for at least three years and not more than twelve years at the inception of the award.
  • Army Research Office (ARO)
    The U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Army Research Office (ARO) serves as the Army's premier extramural basic research agency in the engineering, physical, information and life sciences; developing and exploiting innovative advances to insure the Nation's technological superiority. Basic research proposals are competitively selected and funded.

  • Center for Innovative Technology
    Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) conducts world-class research and development programs that create new industry clusters. This includes programs targeted for biotechnology, nanotechnology, information and communications technologies, marine sciences and the defense and homeland security markets.
  • Chemical Society, American/Petroleum Research Fund (PRF)

  • Chemistry Award, GwathmeyGrants are made to institutions and organizations which qualify under IRS regulations as tax exempt and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes, so long as attempts to influence legislation or to Support candidates for public office do not form part of their activities.
  • Commonwealth Health Research Board (CHRB)
    The Board makes grants for human health research, especially for those efforts that have the potential of maximizing human health benefits for citizens of the Commonwealth. Funds for the grants come from the Commonwealth Health Research Fund, which was established with proceeds following Trigon's evolution from non-profit organization to a for-profit company.
  • Commonwealth Technology Research Fund
    The sole purpose of the Fund is to attract public and private research funding to increase technological and economic development in Virginia. Potential of research programs in the following fields include: Aerospace Biotechnology Energy, Environmental and information technologies, High performance manufacturing, Telecommunications, Transportation, Nanotechnology Modeling and Simulation Healthcare, Microelectronics Homeland, and Security/Defense.

  • Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
    The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the central research and development office for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). DARPA’s mission is to maintain the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent technological surprise from harming our national security. Research is focused in a number of scientific disciplines including biology, medicine, computer science, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, materials sciences, social sciences, and neuroscience.
  • Department of Commerce (DOC)
    The Department fosters, promotes, and develops the foreign and domestic commerce of the United States. It sponsors NTIA Broadband Grants, EDA Investment Grants, NIST Measurement Science and Research Grants, and NIST Science and Engineering Fellowship Program.
  • Department of Energy (DOE)
    The Department of Energy's advances the national, economic, and energy security of the United States; promotes scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission; and ensures the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex.
  • The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation
    The purpose of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc., is to advance the science of chemistry, chemical engineering and related sciences as a means of improving human relations and circumstances.
    The Foundation offers several programs for the chemical sciences.

  • Earthwatch Institute
    Earthwatch Institute engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. It supports scientific field research related to sustainable development conducted by leading scientists in environmental impacts, biodiversity, human ecology, conservation management.

  • Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health SciencesThe Fogarty International Center is dedicated to advancing the mission of the National Institutes of Health by supporting and facilitating global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, building partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and training the next generation of scientists to address global health needs. It supports Research Grants and Research Training Grants.

  • The Jeffress Memorial Trust
    The purpose of the Jeffress Trust is to support basic research in chemical, medical, or other scientific fields through grants to educational and research institutions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Grants are given to assist scientists in such institutions to conduct investigations in the natural sciences, generally considered to include chemistry, physics, biology (with the exception of field studies, classification, other largely observational studies), studies in the basic medical sciences, such as biochemistry, microbiology, and others.

  • Mathematical Sciences Research Institute
    The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute is dedicated to the advancement and communication of fundamental knowledge in mathematics and the mathematical sciences, and to the development of human capital for the growth and use of such knowledge. MSRI hosts programs that become the leading edge in classical fundamental mathematics, modern applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, and other mathematical sciences.
  • James S. McDonnell Foundation
    The Foundation was established to "improve the quality of life," and does so by contributing to the generation of new knowledge through its support of research and scholarship. The Foundation awards grants via the Foundation-initiated, peer-reviewed proposal processes described in the 21st Century Science Initiative.

  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), NASA EEO Brochure
    NASA's mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research. NASA offices and field centers offer a wide variety of opportunities for researchers to join the NASA team. NASA supports graduate students and funding science investigations for missions to other planets.
  • National Geographic Society
    The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must have both a geographical dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be of broad scientific interest.
  • National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Grants
    NIST promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST funds industrial and academic research through the Small Business Innovation Research Program and other grants to encourage work in specific fields: precision measurement, fire research, and materials science.
  • National Research Council The National Research Council (NRC) is part of a private, nonprofit institution that provides science, technology and health policy advice. The Fellowships Office (FO) of the National Academies administers fellowships awards that play an important role in the career development of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and scholars for the academic, federal, industrial and international workforce.
  • National Science Foundation (NSF)
    NSF is an independent federal agency created to promote the progress of science, to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare, and to secure the national defense. NSF is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. The research includes many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences.
  • National Security Agency (NSA)
    The National Security Agency/Central Security Service (CSS) is home to America's codemakers and codebreakers. NSA/CSS has several successful and innovative programs available including COOP, Intern and Scholarship Programs that provide a competitive advantage for those at the university level.
  • Naval Research Laboratories
    NRL operates as the Navy's full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies.
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization Science Grants (NATO)
    The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Committee is the primary NATO committee supporting practical cooperation in civil science and innovation. The organization oversees programs which contribute to NATO’s mission by linking science to society through projects conducted under well-established procedures. Grants are offered to assist the academic community in partner countries to set up computer networking infrastructure and to optimize their use of electronic communication.

  • U.S. Institute of Peace
    The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan, national institution established and funded by Congress. It helps to prevent and resolve violent international conflicts, promote post-conflict stability and development, and increase conflict management capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide. It funds grant and fellowship programs to expand the work of the Institute.

  • Research Corporation
    Research Corporation for Science Advancement is an active, hands-on foundation that stimulates advances in science. It supports original research in chemistry, physics, and astronomy.
  • Resources for the Future
    The mission of Resources for the Future is to improve environmental and natural resource policymaking worldwide through objective social science of the highest caliber. To increase its ability to deliver on its mission, RFF has identified five core research focus areas: energy and climate, human health, the natural world, regulating risks, and transportation and urban land.

  • Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research SocietySigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. The Society endeavors to encourage support of original work across the spectrum of science and technology and to promote an appreciation within society at large for the role research has played in human progress.
  • Sloan Foundation, The Alfred P.
    With its Basic Research program area, the Foundation expands that understanding by funding original, high-quality research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Grants in the Basic Research program area promise to substantively benefit society, or significantly add to the body of scientific knowledge.
  • Smithsonian InstitutionThe Office of Fellowships (OF) has the central management and administrative responsibility for the Smithsonian's programs of research, fellowships, and other scholarly appointments. Fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution provide students and scholars with opportunities to pursue independent research projects in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff.
  • State Justice Institute
    The State Justice Institute awards grants to improve the quality of justice in State courts, facilitates better coordination between State and Federal courts, and fosters innovative, efficient solutions to common issues faced by all courts.

  • USAID (now Bureau of International Information Programs, America.gov)
    The State Department's Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) communicates with foreign publics, including opinion makers and youth, about U.S. policy, society, and values. IIP engages foreign publics through speaker programs, print outreach, and the web in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Persian, Russian, and Spanish.

  • Virginia Academy of Science
    The Academy's purpose is to cooperate with educational institutions, industries, and state agencies in fostering an interest in scientific matters, in promoting scientific investigations and in spreading knowledge of the sciences. VAS has a program of Grants and Awards for both junior and senior scientists. The program also encourages graduate students, Research Associates, and post-doctoral fellows to apply for these grants.
  • Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC)
    The Virginia Space Grant Consortium is a coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities, NASA, state educational agencies, Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology, and other institutions representing diverse aerospace education and research. It offers both undergraduate and graduate fellowships.

  • Whitaker International Fellows & Scholar Program
    The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program supports opportunities to go abroad to leverage international expertise. Biomedical engineers can use program to go overseas to help further their careers, and the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include conducting research at an academic institution, interning at a policy institute, establishing ties between home and host institutions, and pursuing post-doctoral research.
  • Whitehall Foundation The Whitehall Foundation is a non-profit corporation which is focused exclusively on assisting basic research in vertebrate (excluding clinical) and invertebrate neurobiology in the United States. Investigations should specifically concern neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior. The overall goal should be to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior.
  • Whitehouse FellowshipsThe White House Fellows program is America's most prestigious program for leadership and public service. It offers exceptional young men and women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal government. Fellows also participate in an education program consisting of roundtable discussions with renowned leaders from the private and public sectors, and trips to study U.S. policy in action both domestically and internationally.
