Nine William & Mary graduates receive Fulbright Scholarships

Nine recent graduates from the College of William & Mary have received Fulbright U.S. Student Grants, and four have been selected as alternates.
The scholars will use the grants during 2012-2013 to travel to locations across the globe to teach or conduct research.
Seven of the nine scholars will act as English Teaching Assistants. Those scholars and their Fulbright destinations are: Monika Bernotas ’12, Belarus; Grace Brennan ’12, Germany; Caroline Kaine ‘12, Russia; Sarah Mellman ’12, Brazil; James O’Leary ’12, Kazakhstan; Leksa Pravdic ’12, Serbia; and Sarah Salino ‘12, Germany.
Elizabeth “Ellie” Allen ’12 plans to study international health in England with an eye to increasing the effectiveness of foreign and regional medical aid to rural populations. Allen has spent the past academic year studying in Tanzania on a Boren Scholarship. Benjamin Norris ’11, will travel to Finland to conduct research on cultural representations of Finland's urbanization in visual art, film, music, and literature/poetry.
The four students chosen as alternates are: Sara Caudill ’12, Andrew Frantz ’12, Peter Lecce ’12and Suzanne Reed ’12.
According to its website, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which is sponsored by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the largest U.S. exchange program for students and young professionals who wish to conduct graduate studies, undertake research or teach abroad. About 1,800 grants are awarded annually to send scholars to more than 155 countries across the world.
At William & Mary, the Fulbright program is administered by Fulbright Program Advisor Lisa Grimes in the Roy R. Charles Center, with assistance from faculty members and peer scholarship advisors. The on-campus application deadline for 2013-2014 Fulbright scholarships is noon Sept. 12, 2012.
