Business School wins international TeamMBA Award

    In November of 2011, College of William and Mary MBA students organized a benefit beard and mustache shaving auction to raise funds for Kiva.org. Top bidder got to shave their classmates' facial hair any way they liked, and the victim had to keep it that way for a week.

The College of William & Mary’s Mason School of Business is one of two institutions to win the international TeamMBA award for their community service and social responsibility programs, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) announced today at its annual conference in Chicago, Ill.  

A total of 78 service programs from business schools around the world were considered for the TeamMBA award and more than 21,000 votes were cast online in May.

The School of Business won the All Service Award, which recognizes outstanding projects in categories such as community service, sustainability/greening and consulting. Students were recognized for engaging in a variety of projects, including a mustache auction to raise money to start a microlending account, two blood drives that collected 100 pints of blood, and raising tens of thousands of dollars for local and global charities.

“We have known for years the commitment and heart that our MBA students have brought to the Mason community,” wrote Dean Larry Pulley in an email to members of the Business School. “Our students want to serve as well as lead — and they want to make a difference for the good. This award publicly recognizes these outcomes and broadcasts our students' commitment to the global community. Their intention to the change the world – or someone's world – is perfectly aligned with who we are as the W&M Mason School of Business.”

The annual TeamMBA Award program recognizes schools that exemplify a commitment to social responsibility through the actions of their students and the school's demonstrated support of these efforts.  Staff members from the admissions and marketing teams were in attendance to accept the award, given by Dave Wilson, President & CEO of GMAC.
