Virtual Conversation Partner Program

Language and cultural competency are key skills for success in today's globalized society!

The Virtual Conversation Partner Program is a W&M program that matches incoming international students with current domestic (US) W&M students for English conversation practice and cross-cultural exchange.

About the program: The Virtual Conversation Partner Program (VCPP) was founded by Dr. Jingzhu Zhang '15 in 2012. An international student herself, her vision was to create an opportunity for W&M international and domestic students to connect for language practice and to enhance cross-cultural competency.

By connecting students using video chat apps such as Skype or FaceTime during the summer before their arrival at W&M, new international students have the opportunity to connect with a current W&M student and develop communication skills even before they set foot on campus.

This program has been featured in EAB’s Publication Best Practices in Supporting International Students, at the NASFSA and AIEA national conferences, and in numerous university articles.

There is no fee to participate in the program!

Benefits:

  • Incoming international students have the opportunity to practice conversational English with a native speaker, learn about W&M, and help their conversation partner develop his/her cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Domestic student conversation partners have the chance to share their knowledge of W&M with a new student and help the student practice English language conversation skills in a cross-cultural setting.
  • By participating in the program, both international students and conversation partners contribute to cross-cultural competency in the W&M community.
