Virtual Conversation Partner Program

Language and cultural competency are key skills for success in today's globalized society!

The Virtual Conversation Partner Program (VCPP) is a program that matches incoming international students with domestic W&M students for English conversation practice and cross-cultural exchange.

About the Program

The VCPP was founded by Dr. Jingzhu Zhang '15 in 2012. An international student herself, her vision was to create an opportunity for W&M international and domestic students to connect for language practice and to enhance cross-cultural competency.

Through the use of video chat apps such as Skype or FaceTime, new international students have the opportunity to connect with current W&M students during the summer and develop communication skills before they set foot on campus.

This program has been featured in EAB’s Publication Best Practices in Supporting International Students, at the NAFSA and AIEA national conferences, and in numerous university articles.

Program Benefits
  • Incoming international students have the opportunity to practice conversational English with a domestic W&M student, learn about W&M, and help their conversation partner develop cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Domestic student conversation partners have the chance to share their knowledge of W&M with a new student and help the student practice English language conversation skills in a cross-cultural setting.
  • By participating in the program, all participants contribute to cross-cultural competency in the W&M community.
