Eligibility

If you are really happy and comfortable with your present living arrangement, you may be able to continue living there for the coming academic year.  Same Room Sign-up is  available to students who are interested in staying in their rooms and who meet the necessary requirements:

New for Room Selection 2012 - Based on student feedback, we have removed the restriction related to having done a room change.

  • ALL roommates must pay the $200 Room Reservation Deposit by the February 17, 2012 deadline.
  • Residents are not eligible for same room sign-up in special interest housing (Africana, Language Houses, Reves, EcoHouse, Community Scholars, Mosaic, Fraternity Houses, Sorority Houses)
  • The occupancy (single, double, etc.), sex, and class (first year, upper-class, graduate) designation of the room, apartment or lodge remains the same for the 2012-2013 academic year. Same Room Sign-up in first year students' residence halls is not allowed.
  • Individuals living in overcrowd rooms may remain in the same room as long as all occupants residing in the room as of August 2011 agree to do so. In other words, if three students occupied a room as of the first day of classes in the fall of 2011, all three must remain in the same room.  If only two of the three residents want to remain in the same room they would NOT be allowed to do so.
  • All residents of the room must return and be eligible.  For example in a double room both of the current residents must sign-up.
  • None of the existing roommates are Wait Listed for the Room Selection Process.
Block Housing

(This information is subject to change)

A limited number of locations designated by Residence Life may be selected as block housing. Block housing will allow a group of students to select a block of rooms during Room Selection. Using block housing, a group can select a block of rooms or a two-room suite using the best Room Selection time block within that group.

Since interest in Block Housing is expected to be high, we will be using an application process which will prevent students from waiting in long lines if there are not enough blocks for them to select. Students interested in selecting a block during Block Housing Selection, must complete the application below. Only one application per group is required. This application will be used to determine the interest in Block Housing. Applications, which will be available on March 12, must be submitted on-line by 5pm on March 22, 2012. Applications will then be placed in time block number order based on the best (or earliest) time block in a group.  The Group Captains for groups who may be able to select a block will be notified via email where and when to attend Block Housing Selection.

Once a block application is submitted, groups can make up to 2 substitutions to the block simply be emailing living@wm.edu with the name and student ID of the new person and the name of the person they are replacing.   The deadline for groups to make substitutions is Monday, April 2 at noon.

Groups can have wait listed students during the application period but in order to be eligible to select they must be reinstated prior to the Block selection process on April 3.

Block Housing application  -  Application is now closed.

Block Housing Locations - these locations are subject to change. Specific rooms for block housing will not be available until after Same Room Sign-Up. Where possible, specific  room blocks will not be pre-determined. This will provide students flexibility on which floor they select.

Choosing A Roommate

Here are some tips on selecting a roommate which will go a long way to ensuring that you and your roommate(s) have a quality living experience together:

  1. Discuss study habits and the expected study environment.
    • Do you like to study with background noise?
    • Would you mind small interruptions when studying?
    • Do you prefer to study in the room or another location?
    1. Discuss social habits and guests in the room.
      • How often do you like to have friends over?
      • Do you like to have an open door policy for your friends and hall mates?
      • How do you feel about guest of either gender sleeping over?
      1. Discuss cleaning habits or preferences, including sweeping, dusting, cleaning up messes, doing dishes, cleaning the bathroom, etc.
        1.
          1. Be careful that you and your roommate(s) have the same idea of your relationship; are you looking for a best friend, someone to do things with on weekends, or just a roommate?
          2. Discuss how you plan to handle disagreements or misunderstandings when they happen. Stick to your agreement; avoidance and/or gossip is never the way to resolve a conflict.
          3. Discuss how you feel about sharing personal property, including food, clothing, and electronic equipment.
            • Do you prefer your roommate(s) ask before eating your food, borrowing your clothes or using your computer?
            • Is it okay to share and what is off limits?
          • Do you prefer a spotlessly clean room or is neat and tidy your preference?
          • Do you do laundry on a regular basis or only when you are completely out of clothes to wear?
