Subject: Summer
repair work
Based upon an engineering investigation several years ago we learned that,
among other issues, the Graduate Complex buildings were experiencing a gradual
separation of the brick veneer from the exterior walls. One result of
this deficiency was the accumulation of excess moisture in the wall cavity that
is causing an accelerated deterioration of the wood framing. As a first
step to minimize the moisture intrusion all the windows were caulked during the
summer of 2005.
The permanent repairs require more extensive work. We are now into our fourth
year of replacing the brick façade on all of the buildings.
Building 500 was the first to have new brick veneer installed in 2005;
buildings 800 and 900 were completed in 2006; buildings 100 and 400 were
completed in 2007; and building 200 was completed in 2008.
Because work of this nature can be disruptive and noisy to varying degrees, we
want you to be informed of the situation prior to making decisions about your
summer living arrangements. The work this summer will be on building
300 which will be removed from service from May 19 until August 15.
Residents vacating apartments in building 300 will be required to be completely
out of these buildings no later than 5:00 PM on May 18. Regrettably, we
will not be able to accommodate late departures given the tight time frame we
have to complete the work in time for fall occupancy. If you are a 12
month resident of building 300 or will be remaining in housing over the summer,
we will work with you to assign you to another apartment within the
Complex.
During the time of this project the laundry facilities in building 300
will most likely be closed. We are currently exploring alternative
arrangements for those residing in the Complex this summer.
Work is presently planned to take place between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday
through Saturday with noisy work not commencing until 8:00 AM. It should
be anticipated that work may also be scheduled on Sundays. If it is
necessary to alter this schedule, we will notify all residents.
Additionally, for safety reasons construction fencing will surround the 300
building and will make some areas of the courtyard inaccessible. We
realize that this work will be an inconvenience, but the result will be
improved living in the Complex. Thank you for your patience and
understanding as we work to improve our campus. Your questions or concerns
should be directed to Residence Life through email at [[living]].
