Governor's Inn Housing for William and Mary Students

In response to the demand for on campus housing or housing that is close to campus, the College has arranged with a local hotel to offer a small number of rooms to William and Mary students.

The Governor’s Inn is operated by Colonial Williamsburg and is located at 506 North Henry Street approximately 5 blocks from the edge of campus. The hotel is three blocks from the City Library, three blocks from Colonial Williamsburg’s historic area and two blocks from the City Police Station, Fire Station and the Amtrak and Greyhound Bus Station. It is approximately one mile from the Governor’s Inn to the William and Mary Hall and Morton Hall parking lots and is about a twenty minute walk from the College’s Swem Library. Students will be contracting directly with Colonial Williamsburg for these rooms. The College will not be administering the space in any way nor providing any residence life programming or oversight.

Students will be assigned to double occupancy rooms at a rate of $1920.00 per person for the fall semester and $1920.00 per person for the spring semester based upon double occupancy or single occupancy rooms at a rate of $2400 per person for the fall semester and $2400 for the spring semester based on single occupancy. In addition to the room charge there will be a $75.00 refundable damage deposit. All fees are due before students will be provided access to the rooms. Those interested should contact Grenda Greene at ggreene@cwf.org  or 757-220-7694 as soon as possible.

Because these are hotel rooms and because Colonial Williamsburg will need to quickly convert these rooms back for use for hotel guests there are restrictions and limitations that students who choose to live at this location must know and understand in advance.

  • The contract for the room in the Governor’s Inn will be for the entire academic year August 21, 2009 through May 17, 2010.
  • Rooms used to house students will be clustered together but other hotel guests will still be residing in the hotel.
  •  There are no onsite laundry facilities but the Governor’s Inn will provide towels and double bed sheets and weekly linen exchange service. Students will be required to take their personal laundry to Laundromats or use washers/dryers in residence halls on campus.
  • There are no kitchens. Because of electrical capacities and fire safety regulations the only appliance permitted in the rooms are small refrigerators (4.3 cu ft). Information on campus meal plans is available.
  • Students will not be permitted to tape, nail, staple, or use any other means to attach paper, wood, plastic, etc. to walls, doors, floors, ceilings, etc.  Students will be permitted to use magnets on their doors but will not be permitted to attach anything inside the room.  This prevents students from personalizing their space but students will be expected to abide by the contract with the Governor’s Inn.
  • The rooms will be furnished with two double beds, a dresser unit, two desks and desk chairs, and one wardrobe along with a television, lamps, and a hotel telephone.  The rooms contain a clothes hanging unit that can serve to hold clothing. The lamps and headboards for the beds are attached to the wall; the TV is attached to the dresser unit.  The beds themselves can be moved but the headboards, TV, and lamps cannot.
  • Colonial Williamsburg Security includes the Governor’s Inn on its routine patrols.  The hotel is located in the City of Williamsburg and is the domain of the Williamsburg Police Department.
  • Room access is controlled by a card lock system and each door is equipped with a deadbolt lock and a security viewer (peephole). Room keys will be located at the Woodlands Front desk which is staffed 24 hours 7 days per week.
  • Landlord will provide weekly linen exchange supplying towels, double bed sheets, and toilet paper and trash bags.
  • Wireless internet and cable TV service will be provided.  Local telephone service will be provided at the cost of ten (10) cents per call billable monthly.
  • Students will be responsible for cleaning both their rooms and bathrooms and must provide their own cleaning supplies.
  • Onsite parking will be available only for students who live at the Governor’s Inn. Guest parking is prohibited. Students with cars will be responsible for the purchase of William and Mary parking decals that permit parking on campus.  Information about the purchase and cost of these decals is available on the Parking Services website.
