Barrett and Jefferson Welcome Message

Greetings from The College of William & Mary!

On behalf of the staff, I would like to say welcome to our “home”.  My name is Taylor Locks, and I am the Area Director. As a full-time professional, I am responsible for the day-to-day management of the area. I also supervise the student staff members that live in the halls so they may assist you and create a safe learning environment.

We are very excited that you have chosen to join our community for the upcoming academic year! The staff will be working diligently throughout the summer to plan exciting programs and activities to enhance your experience of living with us. We would love to have you all take an active and interested role in this community so that together we may create an inclusive and empowering community. There are many ways to get involved in the residence halls, but one in particular is to join Hall Council. Hall Council is the governing body for the residence halls, which allows you, the student, to have a direct influence into what your experience will be on campus and in your William & Mary home. I encourage you to take an active role in YOUR community by becoming an Executive Board member, a Hall Representative, or even a general body member.

Should you have any questions between now and move-in day, we suggest that you look over our website. It is loaded with a lot of helpful and detailed information designed to be a great resource. Also, you may want to take minute to look at the online videos to get a better look at what your building and room may look like before you arrive on campus. If you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

We look forward to seeing you!

A Message from the Staff

Dear Future Jefferson and Barrett Hall Residents,

Welcome home! We are excited that you are coming to live with us, and we are eager to meet all of you in August. Your future Resident Assistants (RAs) and Head Resident (HR) have come from around the country, as far away as San Diego, and we’re looking forward to experience this upcoming year with you!

Jefferson and Barrett are located on Old Campus, with great access to Colonial Williamsburg, as well as the Sunken Gardens, Jamestown Field, the Campus Center, and Marketplace dining facility.  Both buildings have air conditioning for those muggy Williamsburg summers. There are picnic tables and a grill right outside the buildings, as well as a climbing tree and beautiful porch on Barrett for relaxed studying and extended study breaks.

Jefferson offers some fantastic living arrangements for freshmen.  The first floor is all female, and the second and third floors as well as the basement are split down the middle by male and female. First, second, and third floors have two staff members on each side; the basement has one RA.  There are kitchens and at least one lounge on each floor.  Each room has its own sink and mirror.  The laundry room is located in the basement.  Jefferson shares a duty office with Barrett Hall, and the office is located in Barrett 108. This is where residents go if they are locked out of their room, or wish to check out movies, cookware, a vacuum, etc. after paying their hall dues.

Barrett Hall, a renovated hotel, is one of the most beautiful buildings on campus.  It has a large porch with rocking chairs, parlors with comfortable couches, and high ceilings in every room. Barrett also features a kitchen and laundry room on each floor.

We encourage you to join your Hall Council and become leaders in the building; it is a valuable experience that allows you to help plan fun activities for your fellow residents and to serve as the governing body for the building.  Hall Council is also responsible for providing social and educational programs and keeping the duty office stocked. Residents who pay dues will have access to items in the duty office such as DVD players, movies, vacuums, Wii video game system and games, cleaning supplies, board games, outdoor games, and much more.  Hall Council is a part of self-determination within the residence halls.  Self-determination means that students who live in each residence hall determine their own rules and regulations. Information on self-determination can be found here:  http://tinyurl.com/communitynorms

We can’t wait to meet you! We know it’s going to be a great year!

Sincerely,
The 2017-2018 Jefferson-Barrett Hall Staff
