Non-degree seeking (NDS) applicants apply for admission each semester and visiting students may attend William & Mary for one semester only. With the exception of visiting students during fall and spring, there is no maximum or minimum number of credits that non-degree seeking student may take at W&M during a given semester. However, students taking twelve or more credits in a semester will be charged all general fees (this and other must-know policies and resources should be reviewed in full).

Generally, non-degree seeking applicants must present academic or other credentials comparable to those of admitted full-time students.  W&M does not accommodate non-degree seeking status requests from traditional college applicants who are initially denied admission or persons not eligible to return to the last institution attended.  The College reserves the right to deny admission to convicted felons.

How to Apply

Generally, the application deadline is 10 days before first day of term, although extensions may be available to W&M graduates.  All NDS applicants complete a Non-Degree Application and, if applicable, the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition privileges (see the forms page).

For application and additional details, select your current status from the following:

• High school student
• Visiting college student
• Post-baccalaureate student
• Auditing (non-seniors)
• Senior citizen
• Faculty, staff or spouse

To register for graduate courses in the Department of History, non-degree seeking students must follow the guidelines established by the department. Please visit the Department of History web site for details. 

Once you have submitted your application, please watch for email notification of receipt, next steps, and information on how to activate your William and Mary UserID. This will be emailed to the email address you provide on the application.  If you have not received this email within a week of the beginning of the term, please contact our office or the appropriate graduate school office:
