Tips for a Successful Registration

Before your registration window begins:
  • Read all Registration Instructions and FAQs.
  • Read and understand error messages.
  • View the Check Your Registration Status page for overrides – when you request an override from a faculty member, provide your student ID in the request.
  • Find out more information about the type of override you may need, what they do and how to add the class once you have received the override.
  • Search for CRNs BEFORE your registration window opens. Have alternates prepared. More information on looking up classes.
  • Check your HOLDS – take care of them at least a couple of days prior to your registration window opening. To view your holds, or verify that you have none, select the Check Your Registration Status menu option from the Registration menu in Banner Student Self Service. If you have holds, select the View Holds link at the bottom of the Check Your Registration Status page. More infomation about holds.
  • Learn how to delete cookies. If you have questions about deleting cookies, please contact IT at (757) 221-HELP.
  • Meet with your advisor to plan your course load. Be sure to run a new degree evaluation and bring it to your meeting. If you are required to obtain an alternate pin from your advisor (Freshmen) do so BEFORE your registration window begins.
  • Declare your Major – if you are notified that it is time for you to declare a major, or you are eligible to declare, submit paperwork by the deadline provided in your notification in order to avoid a hold, and be eligible to register for courses restricted to major. Major restrictions are removed the Wed. of Priority registration – when the sophomores begin registering.
During your registration window:
  • Do not try to access the Add/Drop Worksheet before your time to register – improper logging out results in more problems for you.
  • If you are prompted to enter a userID and PIN,other than the ALTERNATE PIN, STOP, logout of Banner Self Service and myWM (DO NOT CLOSE YOUR BROWSER), delete cookies. You may now close your browser. Re-open your browser and login to myWM and Banner Student Self Service. If you encounter the same userID and password request, STOP logout of Banner self service and myWM and contact the Banner Help Line at (757) 221-BANN.
  • Enter CRNS on Add/Drop Worksheet.
  • If you have an override for a closed class, add it via the Add/Drop Worksheet – not the Class Search.
After you have registered:
  • Check your registration carefully. Use the Student Detail Schedule menu option from the Registration menu in Banner Student Self Service to view your completed schedule/registration. Be sure to check the following:
    • course numbers (example: BIOL 203, BIOL 203L, etc.)
    • section numbers (example: 01, 04)
    • instructor
    • number of credit hours
    • meeting days/times
    • grade mode (i.e. Standard, Pass/Fail, or Audit)
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you are registered for the courses you are attending. If you stop attending a class during the add/drop period, it is your responsibility to drop the class from your registration. ALL schedule changes must be made by the END of add/drop period (see above for override info.).
If you have problems adding or dropping a class, selecting pass/fail, etc. …
  • Call the Office of the University Registrar at (757) 221-2800.
  • Please be ready to provide your student ID number, and the CRN of the course you are having problems with.
  • If you encounter a registration error that you are unsure how to resolve, be sure to read and remember the error message that displays for you. The more accurately you explain the problem, the quicker we can assist you.
