Club Baseball Dominates VCU
| September 28, 2009Saturday 9/26 was another huge step forward for the WM Club Baseball team that is growing by leaps and bounds. The VCU Rams have owned District III of the National Club Baseball Association Division II for both of the years of its existence. Each of the following years VCU has won the district and gone on to the DII World Series. However, WM was the team that certainly looked better on Saturday. Game one opened with a scoreless top of the first thrown by Gabe Perkinson. However the WM bats were not to be silenced. In the bottom of the first WM scored 3 runs to take an early 3-0 lead. They never looked back. Gabe only allowed one run through the first 4 innings and the Tribe continued to pound the ball taking a 8-1 lead into the 5th. In the 5th VCU cranked up their hitting, scoring 4 times to close the gap to 8-5 and take the momentum. In the bottom of the 5th the Tribe loaded the bases with two outs. Reid Lawrence then came through with a clutch 3RBI double to the right-centerfield gap to kill any hope of a VCU comeback. Matt Lier came into pitch the final two innings allowing just one more run as the Tribe pushed two more across in the bottom of the 6th. Final: WM 12 VCU 6.
The day wasn't done. The Tribe has traditionally struggled in game 2 of doubleheadders but this was not to be the case on Saturday. Jakob Saunders took the hill and worked out of a mini jam in the first without giving up a run. Control problems for the VCU pitcher and clutch hitting by Sean Haywood and Dan MacAdams let WM keep the momentum on their side jumping out to a 4-0 lead. From there VCU just seemed defeated and the crafty left-hander Jakob Saunders kept them off the board until the 5th. By that time WM had extended their lead to the comfortable margin of 8-1. Scooter Kramer closed out the final two innings and the Tribe tacked on a few more to win the second game as well. Final: WM 10 VCU 2.
Many of the new faces got their first Collegiate hit on Saturday, congrats to: Tyler, Dustin, Matt, Brian, and Mark. The Tribe defense was outstanding making just one error in the two games and saw a top 10 deserving diving catch by Matt Gomez. 15 of the 21 players at Saturday's game got at least one hit.
