Group Fitness Class Descriptions
All of our classes are open to different fitness levels, from those who are new to group fitness programs and/or exercising to those who are active in group fitness programs or another type of exercise program.
*It is recommended that individuals who are new to exercise consult with their physician before participating in group fitness classes. Individuals who have been cleared by a physician but have medical conditions such as high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, pregnancy, etc. should make their fitness instructor(s) aware of their condition in case the instructor has any advice for modifications during the class.
BODYPUMPTM The original barbell class that strengthens your entire body. This strength training workout challenges all your major muscle groups by using the best weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. The simplicity of the class makes BODYPUMPTM a great starting point to develop both strength and confidence. Hot sounds, compelling choreography and your choice of weight inspire you to get the results you came for - and fast!
BODYSTEPTM The energizing step workout that makes you feel liberated and alive! Using a height-adjustable step and simple movements on, over, and around the step, you get huge motivation from sing-a-long music and approachable instructors. Cardio blocks push fat burning systems into high gear followed by muscle conditioning tracks that shape and tone your body.
BODYCOMBATTM The empowering cardio workout where you are totally unleashed. This fiercely energetic program is inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Supported by driving music and powerful role model instructors, you strike, punch, kick and kata your way to superior cardio fitness.
Boot Camp: This class combines a series of athletic cardio drills and strength training intervals to provide an energizing workout - no choreography included. This class is for participants that want a hard-core, intense workout. It is sure to make you sweat!
Cardio Dance: This class creatively blends elements of various dance styles for a fun workout that anyone can do. It includes easy-to-follow, dynamic choreography designed to sculpt, tone and condition.
Cardio Dance Party: Learn fun dance moves to popular Top 40 dance music that you can showcase on the dance floor! Every class is a PARTY!
Cardio/PUMP Combo: Ring in a new year of fitness with Paul and Terry! This is a mid-to-high-intensity hour-long workout that's half cardio and plyo drills from bootcamp-style classes and half muscle-toning tracks you know and love from Body Pump. Each class will be unique and each will give you a total body workout.
Cardio Sculpt: An interval training class that focuses on both cardio and strength training. The class is broken down into three segments: legs, arms, and core. During each segment we elevate the heart rate with different cardio moves followed immediately by strength moves designed to tone different muscle groups.
Fac/Staff Classes: An energizing break for faculty and staff during the lunch hour. These classes are open to faculty and staff members only and are 45-60 minutes long.
Happy Hour: T.G.I.F.! It's the end of the week and time to let loose and have some fun. Get your weekend off to a great start with a fun exercise class! Workouts and instructors vary weekly. Check online or studio postings for a schedule.
On the Ball: Using stability balls, participants will perform exercises that will tone the entire body, especially the core area.
Pilates: A mat-based conditioning routine that helps build flexibility and long, lean muscles, and strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. Pilates puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing to relieve stress and allow adequate oxygen flow to muscles, developing a strong core and improving coordination and balance.
Pilates Core: In this 30-min. class, participants will focus on pilates moves that strengthen the core (including the abs, low back and hips). Equipment such as resistance balls, bands and dumbbells may be used.
Power Yoga: This Americanized version of Ashtanga Yoga is a more dynamic, rigorous approach to traditional Yoga. Get the same mind/body benefits of Yoga while moving through the poses in a more active way to promote greater strength development.
PUMP/STEP Combo: 30 minutes of Body Pump followed by 30 minutes of Body Step. Get the most bang for your buck in this 60-min. strength and cardio combo class!
Spinning® : An aerobic exercise performed on a stationary bike. Instructors use music, motivation and enthusiastic coaching to lead the participants through routines that are designed to simulate terrain and situations similar to riding outdoors. Spinning® is the global leader in indoor cycling and the W&M Rec Center is an official Spinning® Facility. Come experience this adrenaline pumping workout!
Step: Otherwise known as "Freestyle Step", this is a high-intensity workout using an adjustable platform with simple basic footwork. A fun and effective workout for all fitness levels!
Step Interval: A freestyle step class that alternates between step combos and toning exercises. Enjoy the great cardio work out of step aerobics and get your strength training in too!
Vinyasa Yoga: A moderate to advanced intensity yoga class focusing on linking traditional postures to the breath to build internal heat, increase the heart rate and detoxify the body through sweating. This flowing style of yoga promotes flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance.
Yoga: This ancient art is a great way to get fit both mentally and physically. Utilizing stretching, breathing and strengthening movements, yoga is a perfect way to revitalize and energize your body.
Yogilates: A combination of two of our most popular classes: Yoga and Pilates!
Yo Spin: What could be better than getting a really great cardio workout, followed by stretching and relaxation?! This class is half Spinning and half Yoga.
Zumba: Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will get you hooked! Come try out this total body cardio and toning workout that is more fun than it is work! Join the party!
