Foster Grandparent Program Celebrates 38 Years in Southside Virginia

It began with a simple idea: to pair senior role models - with time to give and experience to share -with special needs children in need of a listening ear. In 1965, in an amendment to the Older Americans Act, the SeniorCorps' Foster Grandparent Program Inc. was born. The act's innovative twist was in facilitating seniors' need for continued social contact as an important element of maintaining their mental health, pairing them with troubled and disabled children for additional attention and support.
W&M students support the Foster Granparents through W&M's Petersburg Partnership.
'7Generations' service trips give freshmen a unique start at W&M

The house that W&M built gets ready to move
Atop a flatbed truck in the middle of Barksdale Field on Friday afternoon, a yellow banner bearing the words "Welcome Home!" was unfurled. The students who created the sign weren't just responsible for the "welcome" part of the poster. They had also made the "home" a reality for one Williamsburg community member.
