Community Scholars House

A Living Learning Community

The Community Scholars House (CSH) is a Living Learning community open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in community engagement and scholarship.  CSH is an interdisciplinary house with an emphasis on students' integration of community engagement with academic coursework beyond the freshman year, whether they have participated in the Sharpe program in the past or not.

All students in CSH are encouraged to channel their community engagement interests toward academically guided avenues of community response and action whether it is through course work, the Community Studies minor, independent research, or community engagement leadership.  Past experiences and demonstrated leadership in community engagement are important, but not required for meaningful participation in the Community Scholars House.

Strong applications will indicate:

  • adequate motivation and attention toward integrating some form of academic study with community engagement
  • intentions for developing one's skills in making progress on both academic and community-oriented goals
  • identification of faculty, community, or administrative supervision over one's work

Participants of the Community Scholars House program will reside on the 1st Floor of Jamestown Hall and are expected to actively participate in cultivating a culture that integrates community engagement and scholarship in the resident hall, on campus, and in the broader community.  On-line applications are due in the Office of Community Engagement and Scholarship by 5 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010.
