Alumnus leads, both in the "real" world and in our tight-knit community
| October 4, 2011Think being a student is tough? Or believe the possibility of being a "real" adult is daunting? Try being an Associate at a top Washington D.C. law firm and the Chairman of a multi-national non-profit, Global Playground. Doug Bunch is William & Mary through and through. Graduating from William & Mary in 2002, Doug was the James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup recipient at graduation, and then decided to return to William & Mary for law school, graduating in 2006. Doug has been a tireless supporter of William & Mary, especially the Office of Community Engagement and Scholarship, through speaking to classes (Doug was also one of the keynote speakers at the inaugural Active Citizens Conference) and providing internships through Global Playground to undergraduates and graduates of the College.
On Tuesday, September 20th, Doug spoke to Professor Drew Stelljes' class, Leadership in Community Engagement, about the mission of Global Playground. Global Playground's mission is to raise awareness and share resources with people of the developing world to create educational opportunities where they do not exist. The non-profit mainly does this through building schools and connecting them to one another through technological means. Global Playground has built 4 schools in Honduras, Uganda, Thailand, and Cambodia and a recent graduate, Adam Levin '11, is currently the teaching fellow in Honduras. Doug then went on to speak about on what keep him motivated though juggling two jobs, which all thought was amazing. Finally, Doug spent time reviewing scenarios that he and the Board of Directors of Global Playground have encountered, giving hands-on experience to the eager class. Doug Bunch's visit home provided an exemplary illustration to the Leadership in Community Engagement class of how an alumnus leads, both in the "real" world and in our tight-knit community.
