The Office of Community Engagement sponsors several special service days that offer the opportunity for William and Mary students to participate in service as part of a group.
To kick off the year, Students Helping Out Williamsburg (or SHOW Day) brings incoming students together in service. Make a Difference Day in October, and Spring into Action Day in March, offer student organizations (or even just groups of friends) the opportunity to sign up for a project together.
We also work with communities in Petersburg, Virginia, 25 miles south of Richmond. Each Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we participate in service projects with nonprofit partners and students from Petersburg-area schools with the MLK Weekend for Service and Social Justice. We also sponsor occasional trips to work on projects in Petersburg throughout the year with Pathways, project:HOMES and Tri-Cities Habitat for Humanity.
Each service day is led by a Project Leader, who is trained to facilitate orientation, education and reflection, so volunteers get the most out of their experience.
