W&M Students for Belize Education

Focus: Students for Belize extends service to schools in the Belize Rural School District by: assisting with construction projects, providing classroom assistance, promoting educational awareness in the community, and creating supplemental education programs.

Trip Location: Flowers Bank, Belize & Caye CaulkerConstruction on an elementary school

Mission: Students for Belize Education is a student-led alternative break that travels to schools in Flowers Bank, Belize and to Caye Caulker (an island off the coast) for two weeks every January in order to provide supplemental educational programs, tutoring, and construction. All of these areas tend to be neglected because of a lack of resources and expertise. This alternative break hopes to foster a safe and supportive educational environment for these children while promoting cross-cultural exchange and encouraging them to pursue higher education. This experience is meant not only to alter our own perspectives, but also to create a genuine connection with those Belizeans with whom we interact with through our service.

Approximate Cost per Person before fundraising:  $1,550
