Mac Users: Saving to Network Storage Drives

Summary

A simple change in server address will correct a problem for OS X Mavericks users.

Full Description

After the recent upgrade to our network storage system, we have found that Mac computers running OS X Mavericks (the latest operating system to be released for Macs) are unable to save files to the network storage drives.  Though engineers are investigating a more permanent solution, we have found a simple work-around that can be used in the meantime.   Follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect the storage drive
  2. Connect to the server using "cifs" instead of "smb" at the beginning of the server address.
    For example, instead of:
    smb://jonesfiles.campus.wm.edu/tjefferson
    Use:

    cifs://jonesfiles.campus.wm.edu/tjefferson
