Student Insurance Yearly Plan Changes

The Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan designed especially for the students of the College of William and Mary is a one-year term policy that becomes effective at 12:01 a.m., August 1 and terminates at 11:59 p.m., July 31. Since it is a one-year term policy, the plan is renewed annually with negotiations typically beginning in March. Each year, benefits are subject to change based on feedback and comments from insured students and medical providers, previous year's utilization and various other factors.  Review the table below for a more detailed listing of the changes that have taken place over the years.

2013-2014

1. The Plan Maximum has been increased to $1,000,000 for each injury or sickness.

2. Deleted Optional Major Medical benefits.

3. Removed the limitation of "benefits are limited to one visit per day" for all providers.

4. Removed the Pre-Existing exclusion and limitation.

5. Cosmetic exclusion for "removal of wart, non-malignant moles and lesions" removed.

6. Added benefit for one Dental Examination.

7. Added benefit for Vision coverage.

2012-2013

1. Benefits have been updated as per Healthcare reform. For more information, visit healthcare.gov

A. Increase in Maximum Benefit

 B. Removal of benefit maximums on essential health benefits

 C. Added evidence-based Preventive Care services that have in effect a rating of "A" or "B" in the current recommendations of the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force.
For example, depending on your age, you may have access--at no cost--to preventive services such as blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests; many cancer screenings, including mammograms and colonoscopies; counseling on such topics as smoking cessation, weight loss, healthy eating, treating depression and reducing alcohol use; routine vaccines against diseases such as measles, polio, or meningitis; counseling, screening and vaccines to ensure healthy pregnancys and several other preventive services for women.

2011-2012

1. Waived Deductibe for Outpatient Physician's Visits.

2. Outpatient Physiotherapy; added "medical necessity" wording to clarify benefits.

3. Removed Hyperkinetic Syndromes from exclusion #3.

2010-2011

1. Removed the Hospital Miscellaneous maximum of $3,000 per each Injury or Sickness.

2. Implemented copay for SHC Prescriptions Drugs of $5 generic; $15 brand per prescription (up to a 31-day supply).

3. Increased Outpatient Physicians copay from $20 to $30 per visit.

4. Implemented Home Health Care benefit up to 60 visits.

2009-2010

1. Hospital Misc benefits have increased from a $1,500 to $3,000 maximum.

2. The Inpatient and Outpatient Anesthesia has changed to 80% of the Allowable Charges.

3. Added Mail Order to the UnitedHealthcare Pharmacy Services Prescription Drug coverage at 2.5 times the retail copay for a 90 day supply.

4. The Preferred Provider Ambulance and Durable Medical Equipment has changed from Usual & Customary to Preferred Allowance for Preferred Providers.

2008-2009

There is no changes from the previous policy year.

2007-2008

1. Plans I and II have been combined and this year there is one option only.

2. The Plan is being underwritten by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company.

3. The Preferred Provider Network is UnitedHealthcare Options PPO.

2006-2007

1. First year Undergraduate and Graduate Students are not eligible for Plan I and are required to purchase Plan II UNLESS proof of comparable coverage is furnished.

2. The benefits for Surgeon's Fees for both Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery has changed from "No more than one surgical procedure will be covered when multiple procedures are performed throught he same incision or in immediate succession." to "If two or more procedures are performed through the same incision or in immediate succession at the same operative session, the maximum amount paid will not exceed 50% of the second procedure and 25% of all subsequent procedures.

3. Plan II: Beech Street, Inc. has been added as the National Preferred Provider (PPO) Network, for medical care outside the State of Virginia, Alliance Network remains the PPO Network inside the State of Virginia.

Fall 2006

The College implemented a policy requiring students to have health insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment. Prior to the implementation of the Insurance Requirement, enrollment in the College-sponsored Student Insurance Plan was voluntary.
