External Grants Information
Award:
The term award is a generalized term used for sponsored program funds. An award may be further classified as being a contract, cooperative agreement, fixed price contract, or grant. The award document usually states the type of award vehicle.
Cooperative Agreement:
A cooperative agreement is entered into when a government or industrial sponsor provides partial support for an existing or anticipated College program of mutual interest to the sponsor and the College.
Fixed Price Contract:
A fixed price contract indicates that specific objectives and outputs are to be delivered within a specified time frame for a fixed price, regardless of expenditures.
Cost Reimburseable Contract:
A cost reimburseable contract permits reimbursement for actual costs incurred in the accomplishment of the required research.
Grant:
A grant is defined as financial assistance, and depending upon the provisions of the award, a grant may be classified as a gift or sponsored funds.
Cooperative Research and Development Agreement: CRADA
A CRADA transfers technology between the government and the College. A CRADA does not transfer funds.
ALL Submissions for external funding must be accompanied by the Internal Routing Form Word, PDF (previously known as the Yellow Sheet). This must be signed by the Principle Investigator and the Department Chair and submitted to the Grant Office prior to the proposal submission.
Please be Advised: Due to the implementation of grant application limitations by agencies, the College of William & Mary has developed internal competition guidelines to be effective immediately. Internal Competition Guidelines
In particular, the College is expecting strong competition for the upcoming agency deadline (pending NSF decision) for the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI). The MRI program serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in institutions of higher education. This program permits only three proposals total from W&M: one proposal for equipment acquisition from the W&M main campus, one equipment acquisition application from VIMS, and one equipment development proposal submitted by the applicant selected by the Faculty Research Committee (FRC) with no restriction to which campus the PI is affiliated (either Main or VIMS).
Internal Competition Deadline: the deadline is on hold pending NSF announcement
The FRC will then make the recommendation for a proposal to move forward to agency submission by 12/14/09. The Grants Office will inform those selected to move forward with the full application by 12/15/09.
Please Note: Note that NSF applications submitted on or after January 4, 2010 are subject to guidance in the new Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG)
