Steps to Apply for a Grant
PROCESS OVERVIEW:
1) You have identified a funding opportunity by means of the Grant Flash alerts, use of COS (http://www.cos.com/), speaking with a mentor, or a custom funding search performed for you by Grant Office personnel.
2) Once a grant funding opportunity has been identified, thoroughly review the program solicitation and ensure your eligibility. Depending on the foundation or corporation you may need clearance from the Development Office. Please see "Active Prospects Requiring Clearance for Approach Corporate & Foundation Relations." (pdf) If uncertain, please call the Grant Office.
3) Contact the Grant Office with as much lead time as possible. Grant Office policy states proposals must be submitted to the Grant Office at least five (5) working days prior to the actual grant submission deadline. This is to manage work flow, ensure the proposal gets proper review, and to resolve any questions/concerns prior to the due date.
3) Once you contact the Pre-Award Grant Office, or [[cacorb, email]] , a Research Administrator will be assigned to assist you with your proposal submision, budget development, editing to ensure guidelines have been met.
4) The Research Administrator will work with you until the proposal is ready to be submitted. If an electronic submission is required, e.g., Grants.gov, NSF FastLane, etc, the Grant Office must submit on behalf of the faculty member.
5) Please be Advised: Due to the implementation of grant application limitations by agencies, the College of William & Mary has developed internal competition guidelines to be effective immediately. Internal Competition Guidelines
In particular, the College is expecting strong competition for the upcoming agency deadline (pending NSF decision) for the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI). The MRI program serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in institutions of higher education. This program permits only three proposals total from W&M: one proposal for equipment acquisition from the W&M main campus, one equipment acquisition application from VIMS, and one equipment development proposal submitted by the applicant selected by the Faculty Research Committee (FRC) with no restriction to which campus the PI is affiliated (either Main or VIMS).
Internal Competition Deadline: the deadline is on hold pending NSF announcement
The FRC will then make the recommendation for a proposal to move forward to agency submission by 12/14/09. The Grants Office will inform those selected to move forward with the full application by 12/15/09.
Please Note: Note that NSF applications submitted on or after January 4, 2010 are subject to guidance in the new Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG)
