About Us

What is Student Transition Engagement Programs?

The Office of Student Transition Engagement Programs (STEP) is responsible for creating engaging transition experiences where students are empowered to optimally thrive at William & Mary - and beyond.

New Student Orientation

A hallmark of the initial student transition experience is Orientation, a program that occurs before the fall and spring semesters. W&M's Orientation is run by one of the largest student volunteer staffs in the country and introduces new students to many aspects of the university community including student life, academic policies, and the honor code. The program's goal is to make our students feel right at home from the moment they set foot on campus.

Community Development

Students are encouraged to participate in Directorate-sponsored initiatives focused on developing community relationships, enhancing their personal well-being, and exploring academic and co-curricular interests.  The Center for Community Development assists in these efforts for both STEP and Residence Life as a knowledge, resource, and design hub.

Find, Form & Focus Your Experience (F3YE)

After Orientation, students are encouraged to Find, Form & Focus their unique W&M experience through university-wide traditions and collaborative in-person and online programs that reinforce university values and available transition resources from their first steps on-campus to their final steps across the graduation stage.
