Past DC Summer Institutes

The two-week intensive courses balance time between the classroom, guest speakers, and site visits at relevant locations to the coursework being taught in class. These experiences give fellows practical meaning to the theories and readings taught in class.

2016
  • The fellows of DC Summer Institutes (2016) consisted of three cohorts: the second American Politics Institute, the sixth Leadership & Community Engagement Institute, and the fifth New Media Institute.
  • The American Politics Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Jaime Settle.
  • The Community Engagement Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Drew Stelljes.
  • The New Media Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Tim Barnard.
  • Each of these courses was then followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
2015
  • The fellows of DC Summer Institutes (2015) consisted of three cohorts, the first American Politics Institute, the fifth Community Engagement Institute, and the fourth New Media Institute.
  • The American Politics Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Ron Rapoport.
  • The Community Engagement Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Stelljes.
  • The New Media Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Jeremy Stoddard.
  • Each of these courses was then followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
2014
  • The fellows of DC Summer Institutes (2014) consisted of three cohorts, the fifth National Security Institute, the fourth Community Engagement Institute, and the third New Media Institute.
  • The National Security Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Kay Floyd.
  • The Community Engagement Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Stelljes.
  • The New Media Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Stoddard.
  • Each of these courses was then followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
2013
  • The fellows of DC Summer Institutes (2013) consisted of three cohorts, the fourth National Security Institute, the third Leadership & Community Engagement Institute, and the second New Media Institute.
  • The National Security Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Professor Floyd.
  • The Leadership & Community Engagement Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Stelljes.
  • The New Media Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Ann Marie Stock.
  • Each of these courses was then followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area. 
2012

  • Each of these courses was then followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
2011

  • The inaugural classes of the DC Summer Institutes (2010) consisted of two cohorts, the National Security Institute and the Global Business Institute.
  • The National Security Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Arsenault and followed by a 10-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
  • The Global Business Institute participated in a two-week intensive course taught by Dr. Don Rahtz and Dr. Christopher Adkins and followed by a 9-week summer internship in the Washington, D.C. area.
