Hire a Student Intern

Looking to Hire a World-Class Intern?

The W&M Washington Center runs credit-bearing programs throughout the year that combine academic rigor and real world experience.

Our programs give employers the benefit of hiring hard working, high achieving students with W&M administrators as a contact throughout the internship.

Our students are available throughout the year:

  • Spring: January – April
  • Summer: June – August
  • Fall: August – November
The Benefit to Employers
  • Students are admitted to a W&M Study in D.C. experience through a rigorous application and interview process. They are some of the best students William & Mary has to offer.
  • Our students are available 30-40 hours a week to work as a part of your staff.
  • W&M administrators work to ensure that you and your intern have a mutually beneficial experience. Our team will meet with you before, during, and after the semester to discuss and evaluate the student and their internship experience.
How the Programs Work

D.C. Semester Program: Experienced W&M professors teach courses that expose students to variety of disciplines and issues in D.C.. These classes meet on Fridays. Students then spend 30-35 hours per week, Monday-Thursday, at their internship site. Students receive 6 credits for their coursework and an additional 8 credits for the academic work they complete in association with their internship.

D.C. Summer Institutes: An experienced W&M professor teaches an intensive course (8 hours each day for 2 weeks) that is specifically designed for the Institutes. Upon completion of the course, students begin full-time work at their internship sites, where they remain for ten weeks. Fellows receive credit for their coursework and for the academic work they complete in association with their internship.

Please note:  Work authorizations for international students pursuing internships in the US are handled by the William & Mary Reves Center for International Studies. The Reves Center works with students directly on this process, which typically takes about 1 week. There are no sponsorship costs for the employer. Employers with questions about the immigration aspects of hiring international students may contact the Reves Center at globe@wm.edu or 757-221-3590.
