Counseling Resources

Mental Health Professionals

The W&M Washington Center works closely with the campus Counseling Center to provide students studying in DC an option for local counseling services.

While students may choose to work with any provider (paying out of pocket or using their own insurance), they may instead choose to take advantage of our agreement with Parkhurst Associates Mental Health Services

Parkhurst Associates will provide basic psycho-social assessment, counseling, and referral services, including individual, couples, and family counseling sessions. (Psychiatric consultation and assessment referrals are available within the Parkhurst group, at additional cost to the student.)

Students may take advantage of up to eight Individual counseling sessions during their semester/summer in DC.

Each session will involve:

  • An assessment of the presenting issue
  • Problem solving
  • Referral to potential resources for additional assistance
  • A determination of the need for follow-up

If a student either presents an obvious need for longer-term psychotherapy, or uses services for eight visits, Parkhurst will work with the student to take responsibility for payment through resources beyond their W&M Washington Center involvement, such as personal or family insurance.

Student copay = $10.00/session

Additional Resources

The W&M campus Counseling Center resources are still available to you should you wish to speak to a counselor over the phone.  (While regular meetings on campus would be impractical, you are free to travel to campus at your own expense for any appointments you wish to make as long as they do not conflict with your commitments in DC.)  When you call, please identify yourself as a student with the W&M Washington Center.

The staff at the W&M Washington Center is here to make sure you are happy and healthy during your semester in DC. While we may not be able to provide you with all of the same services that campus has, we have a lot to offer... and what we don't have, we know how to find.
