Student Services
Individual counseling
Individual counseling involves one-to-one meetings with a counselor to address important personal concerns (see FAQs). These services are free to enrolled students.
Couples counseling
Couples' counseling involves both members of the couple usually meeting with a single counselor to address communication and relationship problems. To be eligible for these free services, one of the partners must be an enrolled William and Mary student.
Group counseling
Group counseling usually involves 5-8 students meeting with one or two counselors to address issues of shared concern within the group. Group services are free to enrolled students. For most, group therapy is the most effective and appropriate treatment option. Fint out what to expect in a group and which groups are currently available.
Family counseling
Family sessions usually involve two or more members of a family meeting with a single counselor to address difficulties within the family. Family counseling services are free to enrolled students. Consultations to parents concerned about a student at William and Mary are also available. For more information, see our page for Friends, Faculty and Family of students in distrss.
Outreach
Depending upon available resources, Counseling Center staff are available to design and/or implement outreach programs on a wide variety of psycho-educational topics. Consultation services are offered to college administrative units, organizations, and academic departments to aid in effective organizational functioning. For more information, visit the Outreach page.
Psychiatric consultation
The Counseling Center has arranged for a part-time staff psychiatrist to provide services on a limited basis in our office suite. This means that psychiatric consultation services are covered by student fees. If any medication is prescribed, it is the student's responsibility to cover the cost of such medications. Appointments are made through a referral from the counseling center staff.
